Electric Fireplace Heaters - Make the Best Choice

An electric fireplace heater is an easy and cost effective way to add welcome additional heat and a touch of elegance to any room.

What you won't be getting is the smoke, potentially deadly CO2 fumes, and the mess associated with a conventional fireplace.

Prices for an electric fireplace start at 9 and can skyrocket to ,300 for a combination fireplace/home entertainment center. However, there are many well made, attractively designed models in the 0 - 0 range.

The heating unit, or electric insert, includes the blower, log set and controls. Depending on the model, heat output varies from 1,350 to 1,500 watts. This is enough power to comfortably heat 150 square feet.

In general, the electric insert accounts for roughly 0 (retail) of the total price. So whatever you end up spending over 0 will be for decorating and romance, not additional heat.

Fireplace Styles
In addition to the standard fireplace design, corner units are available to make excellent use of wasted space. Other models offer enhancements such as book shelves, curio cabinets or home entertainment centers. The mantel piece itself can be constructed of finished wood, wood with tile inserts, or expensive cast marble.

Fireplace Sizes
Electric fireplace heaters are usually advertised in three sizes: 33", 28" and 23". This measurement represents the width of the fireplace insert at the front; the larger the insert, the larger the log set and flame display.

Usually, a larger insert means a larger mantelpiece. But different combinations of insert and mantel sizes are available to match the size and scale of your room.

The compact design of an electric fireplace makes it well suited for smaller homes, apartments, condos and even RVs.

Quality of Construction
When you shop online for an electric fireplace you're forced to judge the quality of the merchandise by examining a photograph. Most of the time it's easy to spot a piece of junk, but sometimes it isn't.

A sure way to judge the quality of a fireplace is by its shipping weight. All things being equal, you could reasonably assume an electric fireplace weighing 210 pounds [http://www.alternative-heating-info.com/ProComs_Best_Electric_Fireplace.html] is built to a higher standard than one weighing 120 pounds.

Standard Features and Extras
Standard features on most electric fireplace heaters include the mantel, electric insert, 2 speed blower, on/off remote control, and log set. All models plug into a standard 120V receptacle and are completely portable. Also, the flame feature can be enjoyed at any time of the year with or without the heater.

Some of the available extras include hand carved glowing logs, deluxe trim, bi-fold glass doors, dimmer control and thermostat.

No matter which electric fireplace heater you finally decide to buy, it's important to read the complete product description to find out exactly what's included in the price and what's going to cost extra.

A Portable Space Heater Can Help You Lower Your Thermostat and Still Save Money

By using a portable space heater you can stay warm and save money. And when you use a room heater, you don't have to be afraid to open your utility bill. Stop sitting around the house cold or wrapped up in blankets, get a space heater and stay comfortable.

A portable space heater is great when you want to heat just one area. You don't have to have a large home to have rooms that are not used often; and there's no reason to heat up those rooms until you need them. Or maybe you have a room or a corner that has a draft you can't stop. By trying to unnecessarily heat up every room in our house, we lose a lot of money. For a small investment, you can make your home comfortable.

People know that to save money on your utility bill you should lower your thermostat to 68 or 65. But if you're like me, this temperature is too low. So we have to decide - do we want to save money or do we want to be warm in our home. Turn a bad situation around by using a portable space heater. For just a few cents a day you can heat up the rooms you use most while you lower your whole home thermostat to save money.

Using a room heater does not have to be inconvenient. If you want quick heat you can get it. There are space heaters that can heat a whole room in about five minutes. And you don't have to pay a lot for this type either.

Your portable space heater doesn't have to clash with your decor in order to work well. The types range from an electric fireplace with a blower that will heat up a whole room quickly to a small radiant heater that can keep your feet and legs warm. There are many types and price ranges in between. As you do your research, you will find that there are many different models and each has its own advantages.

When looking for the right portable space heater, you must first determine what you need it to do. Then do some investigating to determine which will be the best for you. There is a good space heater in every price range.

Get all the information you need to make an informed choice on which portable room heater is best for you. Save money on your utility bill and stay comfortable by choosing your heater wisely.

Fireplace Doors - Keep Fire in Its Place

Having a fireplace in your home is a great way to add a bit of atmosphere to a room and warmth. Fireplace doors can be both functional and beautiful. The doors on the fireplace can make or break the efficiency of the fireplace especially if you are using it as a heat source.

Benefits of Having Fireplace Doors

One of the primary benefits of having doors on your fireplace is energy efficiency. Doors that are closed while the fireplace is burning prevents the heat in the room from flying up the chimney with the smoke.

They are also a great way to add a decorative touch to the room that the fireplace is in.

Safety is very important when it comes to using your fireplace. Keeping the doors closed while using the fireplace will prevent hot ashes and embers from popping out of the fireplace and winding up on the floor potentially causing a fire hazard.

Types of Doors

There are a couple of types of fireplace doors with glass leading the pack in both popularity and efficiency. Glass is usually tempered to withstand the heat of the fireplace but to allow for the radiant heat to still come through and to allow the ability to enjoy watching the fire.

Glass is often framed with some type of metal border, brass or stainless is favored. The doors are typically hinged and held close by a strong magnet that is on both the doors and the fireplace. A word of warning about glass fireplace doors although they are an excellent addition to the fireplace you need to beware that the glass will get very very hot when the fireplace is in operation and caution should be taken when loading wood into the fireplace to avoid banging the doors and potentially shattering them.

Metal doors are not as popular because they block off the fireplace, but these are also very energy efficient and are favored on stand up fireplaces or fire boxes.

There are some doors that are a combination of metal and glass, usually the bottom half of the door is metal and the top half of the door is glass. Some doors are crafted of glass and metal with the glass being the primary feature while the metal acts as a decorative touch in the form or scroll work on the outside of the door.

Energy Efficiency

Fireplace doors really do contribute largely to the energy efficiency of the fireplace. They are a great addition and are almost necessary when the fireplace has a blower attached to it which increases the energy output tremendously.

Fireplace doors information [http://fireplacedoorsinfo.com/] can be found all over the internet. Fireplace doors [http://fireplacedoorsinfo.com/fireplace-doors-control-the-heat-while-enhacing-the-overall-feel-of-your-fireplace.html] are a great idea to keep the fire in its place.

How to Handle a Snow Storm

Recently North America was surprised to learn that there was snow in forty-nine of the fifty states and in most of Canada at the same time. Not everyone was prepared for this. Well, I grew up in Saskatchewan where we had extremely cold winters and lots of snow!

There are some things that would be important for you to do before and while the snow is falling:

1. Make sure that you have some supplies in the house in case you can't get to a store for a long period of time. Keep a little extra food in the pantry and some extra rolls of toilet paper in the bathroom.

2. Consider what you would do if you lost power and water. Do you have candles and matches, extra blankets and bottled water available?

3. What type of snow removal do you have? You will be thankful for the shovels if the electricity goes off and you can't use the snow blower. (Oh, and make sure they are handy because if they are in a shed the snow banks might prevent you from reaching them).

4. Begin shoveling before it becomes overwhelming. It is far easier to remove a skiff of snow than a six-foot bank - especially one that has been packed by traffic or pedestrians.

5. Have your vehicle ready at all times. Make sure you have a full tank of gas and a safety package in the trunk with candles, chocolate, flares and extra clothing or blankets. You never know when you might be stuck for hours without rescue.

6. Don't leave home unless you really need to do so. When there is a storm, it likely affects all of your clients anyway. They might not show up or will call in to cancel anyway,

7. Think of fun things that you can enjoy with your "free day". Read a good book. Stoke the fireplace. Bake cookies.

8. Keep an eye on the weather report so you will know when it is time to venture out again.

There are some things in life that we can control but weather is not one of them. A snow storm usually attacks and then leaves a mess behind it. If you are just patient and have a positive and accepting attitude you will save yourself a great deal of stress.

You can be upset or you can be calm.

It's really all about being prepared and turning the day into a wonderful adventure!

Heating Up The Great Outdoors

OUTDOOR HEATING OPTIONS

Heating up the great outdoors was something that many people found themselves being yelled at about when they were younger. However, there are many reasons to heat up an outdoor area such as a patio or a lawn. There are two basic forms of energy efficient outdoor heaters on the market today. These heating options are electric and LP gas. These two basic forms of heating apparatus come in two primary types as well. These types are stand alone models and wall mounted models.

The electric heating options for the great outdoors are many and varied. Some are battery operated, while others require a power cord. These items are popular due to their simplicity. All one must do is plug it in or keep the batteries charged for it to be usable. These types of heaters are primarily wall mounted units but lawn and garden, or patio electric heaters are popular as well. Some even incorporate a fan unit to crate an odor free heat blower.

Electric heating systems often use infrared technology to create a radiating effect. These types of heaters have no smell and work very well for enclosed outdoor spaces, or for a garden party.

Another popular electric heater style is the pole heater. These are pretty much what they sound like, heaters sitting on poles. However, some of the poles can be very ornamental. These heating units vary in strength with some putting out several thousand BTU's of heat. However, these are often combined to heat one general area.

LP gas heaters for the great outdoors are more common than the electric heater type. The reasons for this vary. However, the main reason is simple comfort and tradition. Among the more popular items are outdoor heating units that are upright heaters complete with wheels attached to the base. These mobile units can be moved around freely to create a zone of heat anywhere. Other outdoor gas heating options which are frequently used include fireplaces, firepits and chimneys. There are both gas and wood burning types for each of these options.

The chimney is the oldest known type of outdoor heater. Smoke exits the top and heat radiates outward from the stack. These items are made of clay or cast-iron depending on the model. Modern chimneys are better designed that their ancient counterparts. These new age chimneys are able to be opened up to allow heat to escape from one side only. This allows for the heat to be focused and provides ample warmth even in a terrible winter. These items are not suggested for use on a wood floor or deck however.

Outdoor fireplaces come in three fuel types. There are electric, LP gas and wood burning versions. However, the most common are natural gas and propane using units. These items are basically the same as the type installed in a house. The difference is that it will often be stainless steel to help it weather the elements better. Typically an outdoor fireplace will be mounted onto a patio. Most outdoor fireplaces do not require a chimney.

The firepit is a relatively new innovation on an old concept. These heaters are akin to the old fashioned campfire and typically have the capacity to generate between fifty thousand and seventy five thousand BTUs of heat. These items require supervision when in use due to the amount of heat generated. They are normally made of steel. They can be designed to include a grilling capability. A few key points about this heater type are: do not use indoors, do not use on grass, do not use on a wood deck unless the manufacturer states it can be used as such. The firepit radiates heat in a three hundred sixty degree manner and is one of the best outdoor heating options for a larger area.

Should You Opt For a Gas Fireplace?

Many families love to sit around the fireplace on cold evenings to enjoy the company of each other and the feeling the fire gives them. A wood burning fireplace does have its drawbacks and one of the biggest is the ash and smoke it releases into the air. The upkeep and care that it takes to keep a wood burning fireplace is also time consuming, dirty, and costly. For many, a gas fireplace sounds like it may be easier to take care of.

Benefits of Gas

A gas fireplace is exactly that -- a gas line is hooked up to the fireplace and ceramic or other type of artificial logs is used to give the fireplace a natural feel when it is turned on. The logs look so real and even look nice when the fireplace is turned off. Such a fireplace is easy to light and cuts down on the added expense of buying logs, cutting the logs, and cleaning up after natural logs. A gas fireplace also reduces risk of spark.

You will no longer have to clean out the ashes, scrub the stones, or worry about disposing of the ash or dirtying the air with smoke. A fireplace using gas makes clean up a snap and actually non-existent.

Another one of the great benefits of the gas fireplace is you can easily get it lit with just a flip of the switch and turning it off is just as easy. You will no longer have to worry about buying matches, struggling with lighter fluid, or getting messy with the newspapers.

How to Get a Gas Fireplace in Your Home

There are various kinds of fireplaces that run on gas available. There are some that are portable and stand on their own and these can be used in any part of the house. You should always read the documentation that comes with a portable gas fireplace so you can see what kind of material you may need to use as a base for this fireplace.

Another option is to convert your current wood burning fireplace into a gas burning fireplace and all it needs is a gas source and line connection. There are several choices in the logs that you can add and this will definitely still be able to give you the look and feel of your old wood burning fireplace. Just because it's a fireplace with gas does not mean it has to look like one.

After installation, adding a blower to your gas fireplace will help you distribute the warm air throughout the home. Gas fireplaces are not just for looks; they can heat your house too.

Know About Electric Space Heaters and Their Benefits

Space heating is the best way to get adequate and cost efficient heating. Unlike central heating, it provides heat only for the limited space, conserving the electricity and thus reducing the electricity bill. Space heaters are best suitable for homes or offices with few rooms, in which limited number of people are present.

Many types of space heaters are available in the market today. Based on the type of power source used, they are commonly divided into three types. They are electric heaters, gas heaters and kerosene heaters. Of the three types, electric heaters are most preferred and are considered as most efficient as they have many benefits over the other two types. Here, we will discuss about the types of electric heaters and their benefits. We have also provided some tips on how to handle electric heaters efficiently.

How do they work
Electric heaters (in fact all space heaters) are broadly divided into two types based on the way they transfer the heat. They are Radiative heaters and convective heaters. Here, we will discuss only about the electric space heaters.

Radiative space heaters
They are the most efficient and are famous for their direct heating method. On switching on the radiant heaters, they emit radiations and heat the objects directly without heating the surrounding air. They are instant heat generators. Infrared heaters are popular among them. Quartz bulbs, halogen lamps and metal coils are commonly used as heat generating elements in these heaters. The heat generated by these elements is focused in a particular direction through reflectors.

Convective space heaters
Convectional type of heating involves heating the space by gradually heating the air in the room. This heated air when circulated in the room, results in increase of temperature. These heaters do not provide instant heating, as heating the air needs time. There are different types of convectional heaters like fan forced heater, ceramic heaters, oil filled heaters etc.

Compared to convectional space heater, radiant heaters are more energy efficient as they directly heat the objects, instead of heating the air.

Benefits
Electric ones are very efficient and effective. They provide ample heating in the space, within the minimum usage of equipment. Due to the concentrated heating, not much heat is wasted. Unlike the gas or kerosene based traditional heaters, they don't carry risk of fire and carbon monoxide poisoning. Electrical heaters are environmental friendly as they do not use Propane, Butane, LPG gas or Kerosene. Electric space heaters are very simple to use. They are easy to maintain and most importantly are clean, as they don't involve burning of any coal or wood. They are portable and are easy to install and operate.

How to use them effectively
Space heaters by themselves are very effective. Right usage of these heaters further enhances their productivity. A fan forced electric space heater with a blower can also improve heat transfer. While purchasing an electric heater, see that you select the one which has got two or three heat regulating options, as this will enable you to adjust the heat to the required temperature easily. Having a thermostat to your electric heater will not only make you adjust the temperature of the room, but also prevents from overheating of the room.

Safety tips
Though electric space heaters are many times safer than the traditional heaters, they have to be handled properly. Improper electric connections, overheating or corrosion may lead to major accidents. Therefore, in order to avoid these incidents, follow the few safety tips given below.

  • In case of using an extension cord, use a heavy duty cord made up of 14 gauge wire or larger.
  • It is advised to buy a portable space heater with a tip-over safety switch, which shuts off the heater automatically, if the unit gets tipped over.
  • The electric heaters have a high risk of fire outbreak. Hence, space heaters with low surface temperatures or the heaters provided with thermal cut out switches should be used.
  • It is better not to operate a defective heater and get it repaired immediately on finding the missing controls.
  • Place the electric heaters away from the moist areas, such as bathrooms, which may lead to shocking hazards due to corrosion of heater.
  • Keep them on a stable surface.
  • Regardless of all the above safety measures, it is compulsory that you install a smoke detector to prevent huge destruction.

Electric space heaters are the best heating options when used properly. They are energy efficient and economical. Considering all their features, electric space heaters stand as a good choice of heat sources.

Get Prepared For Fall!

With the leaves changing colour, the chilly weather, and the kids back in school, Fall has truly arrived! It's time to get yourself and your home organized before the season quickly changes to Winter. The following tips should help you do just that.

In the entryway

With cooler temperatures on the way, it's time to get out the warmer jackets and shoes. In order to keep your entryway tidy with all these extra items, you're going to have to make some space. If you don't have a coat closet, consider things like coat hooks to put on the wall and setting out baskets or a shoe rack for shoes.

School/homework station

If you haven't done so already, you might want to set up a place where the kids can do their homework and put their school supplies. Putting up some hooks for backpacks can save you from tripping on them later. Create some sort of "inbox" for any papers that must be signed, and a binder where you can put any school-related info.

Clean the fridge & pantry

The best way to clean your fridge is to take everything out and only put back in what's edible. This gives you a chance to wipe down shelves and drawers. Do the same in your freezer. As for the pantry, keep in mind that many non-perishable foods do eventually perish! Check things like spices, rice, cereals, etc. Use what you can, and toss the rest. Now that it's cleaned and organized, stock the fridge and pantry with healthy after school and on the go snacks and ingredients to make quick and easy family meals for those busier evenings.

Clean those closets

It's time to start digging out the heavier blankets, so wash and store away the Summer linens. You may also want to go through your closet and weed out anything you don't feel like wearing anymore. Store Spring and Summer garments at the back, and bring your warmer ones to the front. The same should go for the kids' closets if you haven't already done so. This gives you the opportunity to see what's left and purchase some new back to school clothes.

Purge kids toys by donating

Now is a great time to start purging old kids' toys, as the holidays are quickly approaching, and more toys will surely be on the way with them! There are two ways you can go about this project. One way is not to tell your kids what you're getting rid of, as they haven't played with it in a year, and won't miss it. The other is to have your children participate. It can be a rewarding activity, in that they can feel good about helping less fortunate children by choosing the toys they donate.

Organize the bathroom

The bathroom can be one of the busiest rooms in the house most mornings. You may want to assign everyone a shelf or drawer where they can store their morning essentials. Your medicine cabinet should be gone through as well to get rid of all your expired medication, but be sure to do it wisely. Old makeup should be tossed too, such as mascara and lipstick, as bacteria can build up on them. Don't forget to change those toothbrushes too!

Attack the dust

After having the windows open during the summer, you might want to cleanse your house of the dust that comes in with the summer breeze. You can start by taking all window coverings down and washing them. If they're not washable, give them a good shake or vacuum. (If you have blinds instead of curtains, just wipe or dust them off.) Wash the windows inside and out, including the sills. Artificial plants are notorious for collecting dust too, but you can easily vacuum them or wipe them down with a damp cloth.

Prepare for cooler nights

It's a good idea to turn on your furnace before you actually need it, to ensure it works properly. If the furnace needs servicing, it's better to have it done now, rather than when it's zero degrees below Celsius! This is a good time to change your furnace filter too, and if you have a fireplace, have it cleaned/serviced also. Another good idea would be to check all your windows for drafts that need tending to.

Do a safety check

It's good to do a safety check in your home at least twice a year. Check all smoke & carbon monoxide detectors to ensure they are in working order. You should have the pressure of your fire extinguishers checked. You may also want to reiterate or create an emergency plan with your family, to ensure that in the event of a fire or natural disaster, they are prepared and know what to do.

Don't forget about your pets

Your pets don't need back to school supplies or have closets to clean and organize, but they need to be prepared for Fall too! Ensure your pets' vaccinations are up to date. Remember, fleas can survive until the first frost, so keep your pets protected! Clean their bedding and wash their food dishes and toys. If you use scoopable cat litter, empty the box completely and give it a good wipe down. If you have plans to travel during the holidays and your pets aren't coming with you, now might be a good time to start planning where your pets will stay while you're gone.

Prepare your garden

Prepare the lawn by removing weeds, seeding, and fertilizing.  In your garden, remove weeds, pull annuals, prune perennials, and plant any spring-blooming bulbs. Fall is the best time to plant trees, shrubs & bulbs, as the soil is still warm, but cool enough for the roots to really take hold. Consider putting mulch in your flower beds, as it helps to protect the plants when the weather turns cold. Plants in containers should be emptied, or taken indoors.

Clean and organize your garage or closet

Fall is the perfect time to clean and organize your garage, as the hot weather is gone and it's not too cold just yet. If you don't have a garage, this tip may apply to a shed, closet or basement storage area! Organize & wipe down shelves (this might be a good time to purge.) Use peg boards to hang & organize tools, and bins & boxes to store/organize the rest. Ensure all beach, camping and Spring/Summer sporting equipment is put away and move all Fall sporting & yard equipment such as football/soccer gear, rakes & leaf blowers to easily accessible areas.

Winterize your outdoor space

Clean your gutters and do a quick check on the roof to ensure you have no loose shingles. Ensure you drain all irrigation lines and garden hoses and bring all hoses inside to prevent cracking. If you have a rain barrel, disconnect it from the downspout, empty it, and turn it over or bring it inside, also to prevent cracking. Clean all your outdoor furniture and equipment with a mild soap solution and water. If you're able to bring them indoors during the winter, you should do so. If not, wrap them tightly with a tarp or other cover that will protect them from the winter weather.

Think outdoor safety

Check the sidewalk and driveway for holes and cracks that could cause people to trip. Not to mention that when the Winter ice and snow gets in the cracks, it will only be a bigger problem in the Spring when everything melts. Fall weather is perfect for patching asphalt and concrete, as it will help it set quicker. With the sun setting earlier, you may want to add extra lighting along pathways and ensure all outdoor lights are in working order and changed as soon as the burn out.

Get your car ready

Depending on where you live, this could be a quick or lengthy process. Now is a good time to have the car serviced and newer tires put on, before Winter hits. You may also want to consider having your vehicle detailed to remove all remnants of Summer fun such as sand in the trunk, chips on the floor and the lingering smell of wet beach towels.

Electric Fireplace Or Space Heater - Which is Safer?

According to the National Fire Protection Assoc. (NFPA) heating equipment was the second leading cause of home fires and home fire deaths.

The heating equipment category includes central heating, fixed and portable space heaters and wood stoves. Of these, fixed heaters (wall mounted or freestanding propane heaters) accounted for 17% of the fires and 28% of the civilian deaths.

Portable heaters (propane and electric) caused far fewer fires, only 8% of the total, but accounted for 46% of the total deaths resulting from heating equipment fires.

So how can this be with increasingly stringent portable heater manufacturing safety standards?

The best answer to this question comes from Fire Chief Eric Chichester of Parkersburg, WV, a state which had 6 heater related deaths in October: "The problem isn't really with the space heater itself, but with misusing it and leaving it unattended."

If misuse of the space heater and not the heater itself is the cause of fires, which type of heater would be prone to misuse more frequently; an electric fireplace or space heater?

Although far fewer electric fireplaces are sold in North America than electric space heaters, close tracking of the occurrences of space heater fires so far this season has yet to reveal an instance where an electric fireplace was a contributing factor.

This suggests that people are less likely to misuse an electric fireplace and therefore the fireplace is safer. But this begs the question; why are electric fireplaces misused less than ordinary space heaters?

The answer to this lies in the overall size and design of the electric fireplace. The placement of the firebox in the middle of a 4 foot wide unit creates a natural buffer zone on either side between it and draperies, furniture or bedding that might be in the room.

By keeping flammables away from the heater you will practically eliminate the number one cause of space heater fires.

A portable fireplace is also regarded as a beautiful piece of furniture which makes it less likely that bags of clothing, boxes, etc. would be piled in front of it - never mind blocking the heat source.

The perception that a fireplace, by virtue of its size, is more powerful than it really is probably tempts fewer people to plug it into an overloaded extension cord. Plugging an electric fireplace into its own wall socket all but eliminates another potential fire hazard.

Finally, the flame display, crackling fire sound effect, and humming of the blower serve as a constant reminder the fireplace is running and makes it less likely it would be left on when the house is unoccupied.

Rather than trying to pit the electric fireplace against the electric space heater, the real purpose of this article is to remind everyone that any space heater can be a safe heater if you keep it at least 3' away from combustibles, don't use an extension cord, and remember to turn it off when you go to bed and leave the house.

Used Wood Burning Fireplaces

When you plan to improve the ambience of your living space, the best option to consider is wood burning fireplaces. Since ages, people used wood burning fireplaces for its relaxing warmth, intimate fragrance and cozy view. Many health experts have said that wood burning fireplaces have many more benefits, such as heat and energy autonomy, handiness, cost-effectiveness to control unpredictable energy bills and also restricted emission.

Since ages, people used wood burning fireplaces of three types, namely traditional, clean burning and EPA-certified. A conventional wood-burning fireplace happens to be the most familiar type and is often related to the age old concept of a fireplace. They are mostly done from brickwork or are factory built. The clean burning and EPA-certified fireplaces are manufactured with much advanced technologies and also provides the user with greater benefits. These fireplaces are insulated and have blocked burning systems, where the glass doors have to be tightly closed for suitable operation. This particular system facilitates burning of the wood more competently and provides considerable heat as well. They particularly help in areas with frequent power cuts or when your home heating proves to be an expensive issue.

Even if you have used wood burning fireplaces earlier, you can consult the specialty retailers before hand for the best suggestion. Of needed you can also take help for the procedure of installation of the fireplace. Ask them about the operating and maintaining regimes required for the wood- burning fireplace. These fireplaces specifically need regular chimney inspections and also cleaning of the chimneys by a sweep.

In the past decades, people used wood burning fireplaces to enhance the antique atmosphere of living rooms. However now, they are utilized to save electric bills as well. Since fireplaces cannot function without any air, a draft occurs after the air is moved towards the fire and consequently heated thereby pulling the air from inside up direction of the chimney. Thus, a vacuum is created that pulls the cold air. Many of these fireplace feature blowers that enhances heat circulation in the room installed within as well as other adjoining rooms.

Once you gain enough knowledge about the functioning of these and select the perfect one; get it installed properly and ensure safety from every aspect. Eventually, you will be able to feel the benefits of having it in your home particularly during the winter season. After you have used it for considerable time, this natural heater is sure to be your favorite choice.

What Is Needed To Add Air Conditioning To My Furnace?

You must have a central furnace with duct work. Air conditioning can't be installed on a traditional boiler, radiant heat systems or space heaters. We must have duct work present. (Boilers that use a hot water coil, a blower and ductwork could be capable of adding air conditioning but these systems are rare.) An evaporator coil must be added to the furnace. In the case of an upflow ( vertical ) furnace, the coil will sit on top of the furnace. Therefore there must be sufficient height in the basement, as this coil is about 2 feet high for a 10 S.E.E.R. and over 2 1/2 feet high for a 12,13 or 14 S.E.E.R. If you have a horizontal furnace as would be found in a crawl space, the coil installs at the end of the furnace and again, there must be sufficient room. Once the coil is installed at the furnace you will need to run ( 2 ) copper lines from the coil to the out door air conditioning unit which is called a condenser. Obviously, the longer these copper lines have to be, the higher the job costs.

There are, however many other issues such as codes that must be taken into account that will determine where the condenser can be installed. This is one reason an on site evaluation is needed. Additionally an E.P.A. Refrigerant Certification is needed to handle Freon! You need to have a licensed HVAC Company involved in many issues, even IF you can do much of the work yourself! Once the condenser is installed, an electrician needs to run main electrical power to it. The condenser will operate using 230 volts of electricity. This means your main panel must have space available for a ( 2 ) pole breaker and also the main box you have must have the capacity needed electrically. Your thermostat will need to be changed to a Heat/Cool thermostat if you have a heat only model. Also the wiring from your furnace to your thermostat needs to have at least ( 4 ) conductors to be able to utilize the new condenser.

If you have only ( 2 ) conductors as is with most heat only systems, you will need to pull new wire to the furnace. If the existing thermostat wiring is stapled to the studs behind the sheet rock this may be a problem to be dealt with. Your new air conditioning system will be cooling your home, but it will also be removing moisture during those hot days of summer. This moisture is drained from the newly installed evaporator coil by a copper or P.V.C. drain line. Normally, in a basement you drain it to a floor drain if one is present. If you don't have a floor drain you will need to install a condensate pump and wire it into the existing furnace. This pump will then pump the condensate water out side to a desirable spot. This is another reason for an electrician. There are general rules of thumb to size an air conditioning system but they are un reliable since a house with loose single pane windows, poor insulation, sky lights to name a few, will need a much bigger unit than a new home sitting in the shade.

Remember, any Heating and Air Conditioning company makes more money the bigger the size. Many times we hear clients say the " bigger the better ". (The correct way to size a heat or ac system is to do a HVAC heat loss/heat gain calculation.) This is as far from the truth as it can be. Number one, too big a unit will cost more to install, it will not de-humidify properly and it will cost a fortune to operate! If your existing furnace doesn't have a big enough blower and accompanying duct work, there is NO point in going " bigger". Still another reason for an on site evaluation. Someone needs to discuss all the different efficiencies that are available to you.

The higher the efficiency, the lower your monthly electrical bill will be, however, the up front costs go up as the efficiency gets higher. Obviously, a person selling the home in ( 2 ) years will probably not get the difference in cost back as would a person staying ( 5 ) years. These are just some of the things involved with installing air conditioning. When people call us on the phone asking for a ball park price it is very hard to do. This is why we have made this page for our web site. We hope it helps to explain why someone needs to come out and look at your home. This is an expensive addition to your home and needs a lot of attention from you and the installing company, working as a team. We however, working from the web can't see your home. You should consult a couple of HVAC Companies to go over all that is involved. We are only publishing this page to help our clients BEGIN to understand, there is a lot to discuss and understand!
